YOUNG DESIGNER INTERVIEW

Alexandra

By Jessica Lynn Harris

Alexandra showing her quick and easy skirt she made during one of our project challenge contests. Students had to design and simple chic skirt and show how to make it on a video.

Alexandra, age sixteen, has been sewing with Love to Sew since age ten. At an early age she knew she liked designing clothes. Her lined, red silk-linen A-line coat won best of show at Love to Sew’s Fashion Show in 2009. She participated in several charity events including a quilting marathon and pillow-making for children with cancer. Alexandra has garnered many first place prizes throughout her years at Project Runway Camps, including: the Africa Challenge (2009), the Future Challenge (2009), as well as the Barbie Challenge (2006).

What project are you most proud of? Was this the most difficult garment that you’ve made?
I really like my red coat. It took a long time to make and was fully lined with pockets. I’m also proud of a strapless black Victorian gown that I made about two years ago at the historical costume design camp.

You’ve been sewing for many years now. What advice do you have for beginners?
Just keep trying, even if your stitches aren’t that great at first. Your projects will become neater and more advance eventually.

If you could design for any major label or store, what would that be?
I would love to create looks for stores like Charlotte Rouse or H&M. They’re my favorite places to shop. They’re kind of vintage, slightly-formal. I also like that you can purchase two completely different looks. I care more for dresses, skirts, and embellishments than trousers.

What do you like best and least about sewing?
I like figuring out how to put everything together. I love when a garment fits perfectly, because that type of tailoring just can’t be bought in store. I’m not really found of pining or cutting, the prep-work, basically.

Ideally, what play would you like to costume?
My Fair Lady. I love that play. I’d make any of the costumes from the black and white party.

What is your least favorite fashion faux pas?
Leggings as pants. Just don’t do it. They’re not pants. If you really want tight pants, go for skinny jeans.
