Methods of Appliqué: How to do Hand  Appliqué

photo

Unlike machine or fusible appliqué where you simply cut out your desired shapes to sew on, hand appliqué requires an extra 1/4" seam allowance all around the outer edge of your shape. Once your shape or pattern is cut out, make a row of stitches from the outer edges of your shape using a 1/4" seam allowance. Clip the inside curves, and notch the outside curves (see below). Press under the edges so that your stitching is not showing. Baste the appliqué in place. To create a puffy look or effect insert cotton batting or polyester fiberfill in between appliqué and backing fabric before sewing around. Use embroidery thread and stitch the blanket stitch around appliqué.

If using felt or other type of non-raveling fabrics you do not need to add the 1/4" seam allowance and fold under. You can just cut out desired pattern and use the blanket stitch to attach it.
