How to make
a
Quilted
Autumn Harvest Scented Hot Pad
Add some whole cloves to this easy
handmade Autumn hot pad to give it the scent of Fall. |
 |
First let's make your
patterns.
Cut an 8 1/2" square out of computer paper. This
is your hot pad pattern that you can use over and over again if you want
to. Write on it, "Hot Pad" Cut 2 of fabric, and Cut 2 of quilt
batting.
Next draw a pumpkin which will fit inside your square.
This is your pumpkin pattern. Write on it "Pumpkin" Cut 1 of
Orange fabric. |
 |
Pin and cut from your hot
pad pattern: -2 fabric -2 quilt batting
Pin and
cut from your pumpkin pattern: -1 orange pumpkin |
 |
Pin your fabric pumpkin
PRETTY SIDE UP onto ONE of your hot pad fabric pieces pretty side up. Cut out of brown
scrap fabric a little 1" square. Place it under the pumpkin with
some showing at the top as shown in the photo. |
 |
Zigzag around the edges of
your pumpkin as shown in this close-up photo. Keep your zigzag on
the edge of your pumpkin. |
|
 |
Place the two hot pad quilt
batting pieces on a flat surface. Put the two fabric hot pad pieces PRETTY
SIDES TOGETHER. Place the fabric pieces on top of
the quilt batting pieces. Pin around all four edges and through all four
thicknesses. |
|
 |
Stitch around the outer edge
of your hot pad going through all four layers. Leave an opening on
one side large enough to turn your hot pad pretty side out.
Clip corners, and trim seams.
Turn your hot pad pretty side out. At this point
if you want your hot pad to have the scent of fall, add 1 teaspoon of whole
cloves inside your hot pad. |
|
 |
Pull out your corners, and
press your hot pad nice and flat. Hand stitch the opening closed.
Straight stitch 2 lines down your pumpkin as shown in the photo.
This gives "quilts" your hot pad and gives it a 3D looking effect. Your Hot pad is done.
To keep the hot pad scented
from year to year, store in a plastic bag when not in use. |
