How to make Bernard, the Rustic Raggedy Primitive Turkey Craft for Thanksgiving decorating.

Bernard the raggedy turkey is very rustic and prim with his raw edges and painted and stained body. This little gobbler is fun and simple to make!

Using the pattern provided, pin and cut out a turkey body and feather piece from a folded piece of  white muslin.

Pin the 2 turkey bodies together leaving the bottom open for stuffing.

Pin the feather piece together around the curved area leaving the bottom open for stuffing.

How to make Bernard, the Rustic Raggedy Primitive Turkey Craft for Thanksgiving decorating. Sew around the feathers and turkey body using the pressure foot as your guide. Don't forget to leave the bottoms open.

Gently stuff the pieces.

How to make Bernard, the Rustic Raggedy Primitive Turkey Craft for Thanksgiving decorating. Pin the bottoms closed and sew once again using the pressure foot as your guide.
How to make Bernard, the Rustic Raggedy Primitive Turkey Craft for Thanksgiving decorating. Paint areas of the feather piece and turkey body brown. I like the effect of dabbing a little bit of paint in random spots. You can paint the whole thing brown if you prefer.

Using a strong stain mixture (1/4 cup of instant coffee mixed with 1 cup of warm water and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon) paint the whole turkey body and feather piece on both sides.

Place both pieces on a cookie sheet covered in foil and bake until dry at 170 degrees. You may want to flip the pieces every once in awhile to keep from burning. Keep a good eye on them.

(If you look at the photo at the top you will see some spots on Bernard that have burnt areas. I happen to like that look and did that on purpose. I did not turn them the entire time they were drying, and therefore the parts that were on the foil "burned" a little bit.)

How to make Bernard, the Rustic Raggedy Primitive Turkey Craft for Thanksgiving decorating. Hot glue or hand sew the body on top of the feather piece, aligning the bottoms.

From gold fabric or felt cut a beak about 1/2" in size. From cranberry fabric cut a gobbler about 1" in size. Hot glue or hand sew the beak and  gobbler in place.

Make a bow from natural raffia and hand sew or hot glue onto the side of Bernard's neck.
