Sewing Craft Ideas for Valentine's Day

How to make a "She's Got a Big Heart" Valentine Doll Craft

You will Need:

5" pre-made doll found at your local craft store
3" x 10" strip of fabric for doll dress
about 1/3 yard of fabric for heart pillow
permanent marker and blush for doll
yarn or doll hair, ribbon
fiber-fill for stuffing
basic sewing needs

This adorable little doll on a big heart is super easy to make and requires very little sewing skills. In fact, it can be done by hand if you don't have a sewing machine.

Here is a pre-made doll you can purchase at your local craft store.

Fold fabric in half twice and draw half of a heart to cut out.

Here's a photo of the pre-packaged already sewn doll. You can find this at most craft stores.

Let's make the big heart pillow first. Fold fabric for heart in half and then fold in half again. Draw a 1/2 heart along the double fold so that you will have a heart about 14", and cut. You should have two hearts now, one for your front and one for your back.

Pin the fabric pretty sides together. Pin heart pretty sides together. Leave an opening on one side about 4". (We put double pins where our opening is to remind us not to sew in-between the double pins.
Sew along the pressure foot edge of the fabric. Stitch around the heart using the pressure foot as your guide. Don't forget..., DON'T sew at the opening.
Stuff the fabric heart with fiberfill. Turn heart pretty side out and stuff with fiberfill.
Hand sew the opening of the fabric heart together. Hand stitch the opening closed.
Sew the short sides of the dolls dress. Now let's make the doll dress. Sew the short ends of your 3"x10" strip of fabric pretty sides together to form a circle.
Either machine or hand gather the top of the doll's dress. Gather the top of the circle.
Gather the top of the dolls dress and cut slits on the side. Cut slits in the side for the dolls arms to go in. Draw her a face and add hair. Make tiny bows from small ribbon and glue to her feet.
You can make a flowers using a green pipe cleaner and small fuzzy balls. I wanted her to hold either a big heart or flowers. I ran out of red felt to make a heart and I couldn't find any flowers in my craft box, so I made a bouquet for her to hold using 3 little pink pompoms and 1 green pipe cleaner.

So be creative and find or make something for her to hold in her hand.

Handmade Valentine craft to sew, "She's Got a Big Heart." Hot glue the flowers or heart you made on her hands. Glue the doll onto the center of the heart pillow.

Your small doll with a big heart is finished.
