How to Make a Crabby Silhouette Quilted Hot Pad

Next time your ready for some crab bisque or fresh cooked crabs, serve them with this silhouette crabby Hot Pad! Great for Summer Time Party's!

You will Need:

-8"X8" square of tan checked fabric

-a scrap piece of black cotton fabric large enough for your crab

-two 8" X 2" strip of red fabric

-two 10.5" X 2" strip of red fabric

-10.5"X10.5" red fabric for back

-10.5"X10.5" quilt batting

-some type of heat bond with a paper back

Find a crab pattern or draw one. Remember, this is a silhouette so you only need an outline of a crab.

Following the directions on the type of heat bond you have, press your crab silhouette on the pretty side of your tan square.

Pretty sides together, pin the two 8" strips of red fabric to the sides of your 8" square as shown in the photo.

Stitch using the pressure foot as your guide.

Press seams towards the border as shown in the photo.
Turn your hot pad pretty side up. Pin the two long strips of red fabric to the hot pad as shown in the photo.

Stitch using the pressure foot as your guide.

Press seams towards the border.

Place quilt batting down first, then the back of your hot pad pretty side up, then the top of your hot pad pretty side down as shown in the photo.

Pin around the outer edges of the hot pad. Leave a 3.5" opening on one side.

Stitch around the hot pad using the pressure foot as your guide.

Don't forget to leave an opening!

Trim seams and clip corners.

Turn your hot pad pretty side out through the opening.

Poke out corners.

Hand stitch the opening closed.

To quilt your hot pad, machine stitch around your the outer edge of your crab. As you are sewing try and stay on the tan fabric, while trying to sew as close the crab as possible.  Sewing on the crab will result in the heat bond getting in your needle and will cause your thread to break.

Your crabby quilted hot pad is done!
