NEEDLE FELTING - Turning Wool Fibers into Felt

A Division of LoveToSew.com

Love to Sew shows you the process of dry needle felting.

How to Needle Felt - The Dry Method - Needle Felting Technique

The charm of needle felting is rather simple and can be fun and addicting.  Fibers can turn into flat or 3D sculptures and projects.

For any needle-felting project you will need: felting wool, a felting needle, and a foam mat. Start by taking a small amount of wool fiber and make a loose ball.

Place it on the foam and gently poke it a few times with your felting needle. Be careful not to poke too hard as these needles can easily snap or break. You want to use the tip of the needle, poke it in the fibers and into the mat and pull it out all the way using an up and down method. Pull the needle out the same way it went in. The tiny barbs on the needle will catch some fibers as you are poking the wool and make felt. Be very careful not to poke your fingers or hands. It hurts! In fact it hurts much more than a sewing needle. (I know.)

Continue working the felt and with the felting needle, adding more wool fiber until you have created the shape and size you want.

Adding other shapes and pieces of yarn is just as easy. Simply place the yarn or different color fiber on the project and begin using your needle poking them in place.

Once you get the hang of this you can make felt projects of just about anything!
