Sewing with Satin Fabrics

About Satin - Satin fabrics are very beautiful to look at. Most of them are shinny and silky looking. Satin slips and slides during pinning, cutting, and sewing, therefore one must be careful and take their time when working with satin.
Uses for Satin - Satin fabric is mostly used for nicer outfits like: wedding gowns, prom dresses, nice tops, suits, and jackets. Not very many crafts are made from satin.
Average Cost - Satin fabrics cost any where from $5.00  - $15.00 a yard.
Comments - Most satin fabrics are a "slippery" fabric.  Satin seams are hard to take out with a seam ripper because it is easily torn.  This is why I only allow my experienced sewers to sew with satin.  If you are new sewer, I suggest you wait until you are a little more familiar with sewing before you try satin fabrics.

Most types of satin fabric fray or unravel at the ends as you can see in this picture.  This fabric was just cut and bought at the fabric store. I came home and took the picture. Look how much it frayed in that little bit of time.  It frays while you work with it too.  This would be frustrating to a new student. It is recommended that students should wait until they are more experienced to sew with satin.

Satin - Glossy silk or rayon fabric...a fabric woven of silk or rayon, with a smooth glossy finish and a dull back

For the most part satin fabric is difficult to sew with and it would be frustrating to a new student. It is recommended that students should wait until they are more experienced to sew with satin.

All three dresses above were made from different types of a satin fabric.
