Meet the Family

Judi Montgomery Harris director and owner of Love to Sew Studio.

(The photo above is of my family at my mom's house for Easter in 1996. This photo is so typical of my children's personalities. Jaqi, the oldest, is in-between mommy (me) and daddy. Until Jaqi married, she had to be between us during photos or if we were sitting at an event. Jamie, one step below me, is the little actress in the photo with the laugh. Her comfort zone is on stage or in front of a camera. Johnny, the youngest and only boy, is being goofy, and Jessica our quiet and shy child is off to the side with a meek timid smile on her face. Nothing much has changed after all these years.

It seems like just yesterday I was running my kids around to their many sports and activities. Attending gymnastic meets, cheerleading competitions, karate tournaments, and sitting through two act musicals was part of our family's every weekend affair.

Family is the most important thing in life to me, so during my children's younger years, the ages I feel are the most crucial to child development, my husband and I made every effort possible to have me home for them. During their grade school and middle school years, I was a stay at home mom. When I wasn't running them around, I could be found in my studio making crafts and quilts in bulk preparing for weekend craft shows. Each show one child was able to come and help me, and during the slow times, we would spend some quality time together thinking of new crafts and ideas. Doing this gave the children a chance to see mom's hard work pay off. It gave them a feeling of pride that people were willing to spend their money on my handmade crafts and quilts. I believe this helped them understand and support my business today.

(The family today has grown... from left to right: son John, husband Jack, me, son-in-law to be Andy, daughter Jamie, daughter Jaqi, son-in-law Joe, daughter Jessica, and Jessica's boyfriend, Ben.)

Each and every person in the family has supported me and helps in someway in my business for both the studio and the website. They have helped with everything from building runways and displays, filming, modeling, set design, graphic design, judging, instructing, and we have spent countless hours together at the dinner table discussing sewing, crafting, quilting, and fashion design ideas! Even daughter Jamie, a singer/song writer opens for all of our fashion shows. But what I think has made the biggest impact on my success with both Love to Sew Studio and the website is the verbal and emotional support that my family has given me.

Support and help go beyond the younger generation. No one played a bigger part in my business than the support of my mom. She still today encourages me and supports me in everything I do with the business, from finding the newest method or gadget that has to with crafting or sewing, to searching at many antique shops throughout the US to find the oldest kids sewing machine she can to add to my antique sewing machine collection (which she started for me). She also handles all the food for our annual fashion show!

Don't be surprised to see my sister Jennifer, and some of my nieces on the side lines also helping out. My niece Erika is a tattoo and cake decorating artist. Her artistic abilities helped with the make-up and hair for our VOGUE magazine shoot, and you can find her in the Jane Austin regency era gown with the combat boots in the ad! My niece Kelly who resides in Illinois enjoys coming here just for the fashion show to help out. She also helps makes some crafts and she can be found on the cover of our 2013 "Once Upon a Time" Fashion Show Program as the evil Queen.

People have told me that we are a very artistic family. I don't really look at it that way, it's just something that we all love to do as both individuals, and as a family...imagine something... and then create it.

My 3 beautiful girls!
