"Sarah's Old-fashioned Molasses Sugar Cookies"

Recipe for soft and chewy old fashioned molasses sugar cookies for fall baking.

Who loves ginger snaps? ME ME ME ME ME! "mmmmm", these cookies are so good, they are better than ginger snaps, they are soft and chewy!  They look perfect, like the store bought cookies do.  My friend Sarah gave me this recipe.  It has been passed down four generations in her family. These Old-Fashioned Molasses Sugar Cookies are great during the cool fall months and into winter time.  Just after baking them, try a warm cookie with hot-chocolate. Yummy!

Sarah's Old-fashioned Molasses Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

3/4 cup of shortening
1 cup of sugar
1/4 cup Brer Rabbit Molasses (mild flavor with the gold label)

1 egg

2 tsp. baking soda

2 cup sifted all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp. cloves

1/2 tsp. ginger

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Melt shortening in a saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat; let cool.

Add sugar, molasses and egg to bowl; beat well.  Sift together dry ingredients; add to first mixture.  Mix well; chill.

Form in 1 inch balls, roll in granulated sugar and place on greased cookie sheets 2 inches apart.  Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

When you cover the bowl and put it in the refrigerator the cooled dough makes it a lot easier to roll and the dough won't stick to your hands. So in-between baking the cookies, I always put the bowl back in the fridge, even if it's only for 5 minutes!

Roll those babies in lots and lots of sugar! After all they are called "Old-Fashioned Molasses SUGAR Cookies!"

The sugar coated cookie dough balls are lined up in a row on a greased cookie sheet just waiting to be baked!

Look at how perfect and delicious they look when they come out of the oven! YUMMY!

I will let you in on a little secret,... I ALWAYS double the recipe, and put 1/2 of the cookie dough in a plastic bag and freeze it. That way when my family is ready for more, I can just grab some out of the freezer, let it defrost and bake some more cookies.
