Dress Forms for Making Your Own Clothes

Fashion designers start with a sketch or an idea.

SEW COOL...being a FASHION DESIGNER

Fashion Designers are people with a desire to create. Fashion designers design clothing and accessories. Some high-fashion designers are self-employed and design for individual clients. Other high fashion designers cater to specialty stores or high fashion department stores. These designers create original garments, as well as those that follow established fashion trends. Most fashion designers, however, work for apparel manufacturers, creating designs of men's, women's, and children's fashions for the mass market. While other's manage their own little boutique and create clothing for their store.

Fashion Designers take their artistic ability and turn their ideas into clothing and accessories that we read about, live in, buy, and wear.  When creating a design, the designer first considers things like: size, use, fit, color, cost, etc... Then they prepare sketches, and consult their client or art team or director. Usually the garment is made of muslin first, then made out of the desired fabric and trim.

Designers start with an idea in their heads and then sketch it.

Then designers make a pattern and then make the garment with different fabrics and trims.

FASHION FORWARD

Whether you want a career as a designer or just want to learn to make your own clothes here is how to get started

Your first step...Take a sewing class!

Take some drawing courses.

Get a fashion degree. For more information check out search engines on the web under schools with fashion design.

A fashion institute can teach basic skills and marketing.

Fashion design can be as simple as changing around a top you already have. This story is a "Cinderella" story in the fashion design industry. This is a true story...

A girl (let's call her Jamie) takes a sewing class in school, she loved it, and began  sewing all the time at home as a hobby.  She even made her own prom dresses.  One day she walked into a store wearing a top she made. The store owner loved it and placed an order. The tops sold quickly so the owner placed another order.  Jamie begins to think, "Maybe I'm onto something here." So she took it  more serious, and began making pants, skirts, tank tops, and hats. Jamie now has her own "line",  and her success grew from there.  What made Jamie's clothes so special? There are so many mass produced clothes out there, that finding something unique is a great thing. (Mass produced means -things made in great quantities, like a pink t-shirt you bought at a department store and you find that 3 of your friends have the same one, and so do 8,000 other girls in your state.)

YOU HAVE TO SET YOURSELF APART AND MAKE IT SPECIAL!

WORDS OF WISDOM

Take the time to be creative. Always be sketching and writing down ideas. Buy a top at a store, cut it up, and add things to it!  If you make it, you got to wear it and live it, you never know who is going to see it!

THIS JOB IS FOR YOU IF...

you love to sew, and if you are creative, open minded, and you can take criticism well.
