Designing AND Sewing Your own Clothes and Costumes

There are stages that one must go through for designing and making your own clothes.  First, one must draw a sketch as seen above on the left. After watching "Gone with the Wind", Jessica wanted to make a long gown with ruffles in pink and trimmed in black lace.  She drew her designs on paper first.  Then we found a similar pattern at the store.  We made pattern alterations to fit her needs and wants of the type of skirt and the "look" that she wanted.  Then we cut, pinned, and sewed the Victorian or civil war era skirt together.

One of the BIGGEST benefits of  designing AND making your clothes is NO ONE else has them.  If you designed it and made it, no one else will be wearing it!!!  Plus you get the added satisfaction that your are not just a seamstress but a designer too!!!!!

Let's look at different sketches

This sketch has a body to it, or a figure.  See the head, arms, and legs, this is a body sketch, with a design drawn on the body.

This sketch has no body parts, just the sketch of the costume that the designer wants to make. Both sketches are appropriate, neither is wrong or different.
