Handmade Garments using a Gathering seam

Photo Page

Page 1

As you can see in this photo plenty of gathering was used.  You can imagine how frustrating making this broom skirt would have been if all these layers of gathering would have had to been done by hand.

A lot of fabric, lace trim, time, and gathering went into this queen's gown for a local theatre company. I can't even imagine gathering all this gown by hand.

When gathering large garments like this for theater or for costumes, you may want to use embroidery thread instead of pulling up your bobbin and upper threads as directed.  Just leave about 2-3 inches extra at the beginning and the end and just zigzag over the embroidery thread.  It will be stronger and not break.  You only need to do this method if you are sewing heavy fabric or large fabrics and seams for costumes.

Many gathering seams were used to make this adorable pretty skirt.  Click here for free directions on making this skirt.

Even a simple garment accessory like a garden apron requires a lot of gathering.

Little gathering was required for this halter top summer dress.  However, where it was required is important. The halter top part to support the chest area is where it was required, so it was important that I made sure the gathering was very even to give my "client" the best looking and fitting dress.  Uneven gathering would have made her top seem unbalanced or uneven.
