Free Halloween Sewing Pattern - How to sew a Fabric Halloween Pumpkin with a Witch Hat

This adorable Jack-O-Lantern with a witch's hat can be kept from year to year.  He is simple and fun to make.

For this project you will need: orange and black felt, stuffing, beans or rice, and basic sewing needs.

First you will need to make your pattern for the pumpkin. Fold an 8 1/2"X 11" paper in half, and then in half again.  On the sides with no folds draw a curved line as shown in the photo.

Open your paper and you have your pumpkin pattern.

Pin and cut 4 of the pumpkin pattern out of the orange felt.

Pin and stitch 2 of the pumpkin pieces together down ONE side as shown in the photo. Do the same to the other two pieces of pumpkin fabric.

Take one of your 2 pieces and add a pumpkin face to it.  Cut out black eyes, nose, and mouth.  Zigzag the face on the PRETTY SIDE of one of your pumpkin pieces by stitching close to the edge of each of the face pieces as shown in the photo.

Place the 2 double pumpkin pieces PRETTY SIDES together and pin both sides as shown in the photo. Stitch using the pressure foot as your guide.

This is what you pumpkin should look like at this point.
Using string or ribbon, gather up the bottom with your hand and tie a knot as tight as you can around the bottom extra fabric as shown in the photo.  Wrap it around again and tie another knot just to make sure the bottom is held securely.
Turn your pumpkin pretty side out and fill it up about 1/3 of the way with rice or beans.  This will help your pumpkin to "stand" better.
You can sew a fabric stuffed pumpkin. Hand stitch the top opening closed.
Using a luncheon plate as your pattern, cut out a circle out of the black felt. This is the bottom of your hat.

Cut out a triangle out of the black felt as high and wide as you want the top of your hat to be.

Fold the triangle in half and pin and sew down the one side as shown in the photo. Turn it pretty side out.

Hot glue the bottom part of the hat on the pumpkin and then hot glue or hand sew the top part of the hat on your adorable handmade Halloween pumpkin!!!
