How to make a Valentine Quilted Hot Pad / Candle Mat

Sewing Projects for Valentine's Day

With this project you can turn your Quilted Valentine Hearts into a hot pad, or Valentine dollies, or a candle mat.

You will need:

-scraps of Valentine fabric

-scraps of ribbon and rick-rack

-scraps of quilt batting

Fold an 8.5" x 11" piece of computer paper and make yourself a large heart pattern.

Cut it out.

With the heart pattern still folded, mark a line from the center of the top of the heart to about 3.5" to the bottom as shown in the photo. Cut.

This gives you 3 pattern pieces for your quilted heart.

Pin and cut 2 of the rounded piece of the heart, and one of the bottom pointed piece of the heart from another fabric print.

These are what the pieces should look like when cut out.

Place one of the round pieces to the pointed piece pretty sides together. Pin. Stitch the seam using the pressure foot as your guide.

This is what it will look like when one side has been sewn.

Place the other rounded side to the other pointed side pretty sides together and pin. Stitch down the seam once again using the pressure foot as your guide.

Time to decorate your seams! Using ribbon, lace, rick-rack, or what ever you prefer, stitch the embellishments down the seams.

If you want this to be a hot pad, you can add a handle.

Fold a 5" piece of ribbon in half and place the raw edge ends near the top of the heart as shown.

Stitch in place.

Using the heart you just made as a pattern, cut out a quilt back and a quilt batting the same size.

Place the quilt batting down on the table, then the back of the heart pretty side of the fabric up, and last place the quilted heart top pretty side down as shown in the photo.

Pin around the edge of the heart and leave a 3.5" opening on the side.

Stitch around the heart using the pressure foot as your guide. (Don't forget to leave your opening.)

Trim seams, turn heart pretty side out. Poke out corner and seams and press nice and flat.

Hand stitch the opening closed.

Top stitch all around the outside of the heart using the pressure foot as your guide.

Your quilted hearts are done, and best of all, they were made with love!
