Hollywood Hits with "Sewing Scenes"

1930 - 1960 - see below
1961 - 1990 - click here
1991 - present - click here

1939 -"Gone with the Wind" - After the civil war while Rhett Butler (played by Clarke Gabel) was in jail. Mammy makes Scarlet a green gown out of curtains trying to fool Rhett into believing that Scarlet is still a rich southern lady.  Click here to see Jessica's antebellum skirt that was inspired by the costumes worn by Vivian Lee (Scarlet O'Hara.)

1949-"Cinderella" - The scene is where Cinderella wants to get to the "Ball". She needed to make her own dress. Just as she started sewing the evil step mother and sisters gave her plenty of work so she couldn't sew it. So the little mice help her with sewing as they sing "We can do it!"
Here is one of the little mice who helped make Cinderella's dress for the ball, only to have the mean step sisters rip it off of her.

1953 - "Peter Pan" - One can't forget the famous scene of Peter Pan flying in Wendy's window trying to catch his shadow that he left there the night before.  When he does grab it, Wendy sews his shadow back on. (ouch)

1959 - "Sleeping Beauty" - The entire movie is based on Sleepy Beauty touching the spindle on a spinning wheel. (a spinning wheel is what spins your wool into yarn or thread. From that point you use the yarn or thread to sew.) I guess not much sewing took place back then since the king ordered all spinning wheels to be thrown out for 16 years. We all know the ending...The handsome prince kisses Sleeping Beauty, she awakes, and they live happily ever after...

Pictured on the right is what a spinning wheel looks like.  This is how yarn and thread was made back before electric.

People  still use these today , even in competitions. A competition last all day: first they bring in a  sheep and shave it, next they spin the wool into yarn, and then knit a sweater.

"At this point in the movie the evil witch is saying," TOUCH THE SPINDLE I SAY...TOUCH IT!!!"   I know this because I have 3 daughters and a son and have watched this movie and every other Disney movie about 100 times!!!

Sleeping Beauty (Special Edition)
VHS Tape; Buy New: $24.99
