How to Knit

Learn How to Cast On

Cast On knitting abbreviation is CO

You must first cast on the first row of stitches before you begin to knit.

Before you can begin knitting, you must cast on your first row of stitches.  To do so, first tie a slipknot on your knitting needle.

There are probably 10 or 20 different ways on can cast on.  We are going to show you the easiest way. (At least we think it is.)

Hold the knitting needle with the slipknot in your left hand. Wrap the yarn around your right index finger as shown in the photo.
Once the yarn is wrapped around your index finger put your index finger next to the needle and slide the yarn over the needle.
Pull down on the yarn. This is one cast on.  Do this as many times as your pattern calls for.  Example, if your pattern tells you to cast on 18 stitches.  Then you need to cast on 17, because your slipknot counts as one.
