How to Make an "Easy Pieced Quilt"

How to sew an easy pieced quilt.

This is a great quilt for beginner sewers of any age. Follow the directions carefully and have fun.  When your done, your quilt can be a blanket for the beach, or a quilt to snuggle with while watching T.V. Please send us a photo so we can post it on our site!

1. First chose your colors. Try to stick to a color scheme. Then cut eighty 5" squares. Cut eighty 5" squares for your "My First Quilt."
2. Pin two squares pretty sides together down one side. Do this to all of your squares. You should have 40 of these. Pin and sew one side of two squares pretty sides together for your quilt.
3. Sew down the one side using the pressure foot as your guide. Sew all 40. Now you have 40 of two squares sewn together.
4. Take the 2 of the two squares and pin them pretty sides together down the one side. You should have 20 of these.
5. Sew down the one side using your pressure foot as your guide. Sew all 20. Now you should have 20 of four squares sewn together. Sew two sets of two squares together to form a row of four squares.
6. Take the 4 squares sewn together and pin them with pretty sides together to another set of 4 squares sewn together.  Pin them down the one side.
7. Sew down the one side. You should have 10 of these. Now you should have 10 rows of eight squares sewn together. Sew two rows of four squares together to form a row of eight squares.
8. Press the squares with the seams all one way. Press all 10 sets rows.
9. Set up your 10 rows of squares on a flat surface the way you would like them to be for your quilt top.  Set up your ten rows of eight squares sewn together to see what your quilt top will look like.
10. Pin pretty sides together one set of 8 squares to another set of 8 squares matching at the seams. Stitch down the long side using the pressure foot as your guide. Pin two rows of squares pretty sides together.
11. Stitch down the sides using the pressure foot as your guide. Do this 4 more times. Then take the 2 sets of 8 and sew them together. Sew down the seam using your pressure foot as your guide.
12. Do this until the top of your quilt is done and all sewn together.
13. Cut a back for your quilt the same size as the top of your quilt. Cut the batting for your quilt the same size as the top and back. Place the batting on the table first. Then place the back of the quilt with the pretty side up. Then place the top of the quilt with the pretty side down. (the pretty sides should be facing each other)
14. Pin through all three layers around the outer edge of your quilt. Leave an opening large enough to turn your quilt to pretty side out (about 6 inches). Put double pins to remind you to stop at that point for an opening. Sew around the quilt (don't forget to leave an opening) Clip corners and trim seams where it is needed.
15. Turn your quilt pretty side out and press.
16. Hand stitch your opening closed.
17. We will be using the oldest method of quilting.  Take a large needle with either yarn or ribbon and take a stitch through the top of your quilt going through all layers of the quilt. Come back up to the top from the back and then tie a knot or bow on top of the quilt. Knots are approx. 4 to 5 inches apart. The quilting method will be ties.

Your Beautiful Quilt is DONE!!!

Now that you can make an easy pieced quilt try changing it around a little bit like these ideas:

Taylor makes our my first quilt and then added a border around it.

Once you have finished the quilt top add a border around it, then measure for the backing and batting, and put it together. That's what Taylor did to make her awesome quilt!

Kelly follows directions from our my first quilt directions but doubles it to make a very large quilt.

Try making two quilt tops and then sewing them together to make one BIG quilt like Kelly did!

We love photos and would like to show your quilt on our site.
