DIY:

How to Make / Sew a Quilted Make-up Bag

By Judi Harris

How to Make a Quilted Make-up Bag. First let's make a pattern.

Fold a computer size piece of paper in half and cut on your fold line. Using one of the pieces of paper mark your pattern with the following words: You will need a "Fold Line" mark on the 8 1/2" side. The other 3 sides can just have a thick cutting line. Write "Make-up Bag" on your pattern piece, and write "Cut one on fold for fabric, muslin, and quilt batting."

The other piece of paper can be your pattern piece for the make-up bag lining. Write on that piece, "Cut 2 of lining".  There is no need for a fold line for your lining.

Cut out your fabric, muslin, batting, and lining, according to the directions on your pattern pieces. Make sure where the fold line is that your fabric is folded there and you do NOT cut there.

Sandwich the quilt batting in between the muslin and the fabric. Place the fabric PRETTY SIDE UP.

Quilt the three layers together anyway you would like.  I have my new students quilt diagonal lines as you can see in the photo.
Cut a strip of color coordinating fabric 3" X 12".  Press each long side 1/4" to the ugly side of the fabric as shown in the photo.
Pin the strip in place down the long center of the PRETTY SIDE of the bag as shown in the photo.

Top stitch along each side of the strip of fabric to hold in place.

How to Make a Quilted Make-up Bag. Pin one of the lining pieces to one short side of the bag. Straight stitch using the pressure foot as your guide.
How to Sew a quilted make-up bag. Do the same to the other side.

This is what your bag will look like when spread out.

Fold the bag PRETTY SIDES TOGETHER in half by placing the two linings together. Pin around the bag.

Leave a 4" opening where the linings are together. This opening is so that you can turn your bag later.

Do not stitch at the fold.

Stitch around the sides and top of the bag. DO NOT FORGET TO LEAVE YOUR OPENING!

Trim seams and clip corners if need be.
How to Sew a Quilted Make-up Bag. Pull the bag PRETTY SIDE OUT through the opening where you didn't sew.

Pin the opening closed as shown in the photo.  Either hand sew or machine sew the opening closed.

Tuck the lining inside the bag. Press the seam at the top where the lining and bag meet.
Top stitch around the top of the bag as shown in the photo.
This next step is for the bow. You can use ribbon for this next step or make your own. If you are using ribbon just make a bow and hand sew it onto the center of the bag.

Cut an 8"X2" strip of fabric for the bow. Fold the strip 3 times to create a small skinny ribbon. Stitch down the center.  Make a bow and hand stitch to the center of the bag.

How to Sew a Quilted Make-up Bag. Add Velcro to the center inside of the bag as your closure.
