By Jessica Lynn Harris

Melissa an upcoming designer who studies at Love to Sew Studio. She is thirteen years old and in eighth grade. Currently, she enjoys modern dance and acting. This year she played the lead role of Jasmine in her school’s version of the play Aladdin. Melissa showed a four piece collection, a looked inspired the film Grease (poodle skirt and all!), and a Lady Gaga costume last year at the annual fashion show. In the future, she hopes to either become a successful fashion designer or actress.

When did you start sewing and why?

I was around nine years old and one of my good friend’s mom sewed, and I wanted to, too. I first made projects at Joanne’s and AC Moore. I made a pillow case and pajama pants.

Who are your favorite designers and why?

I like Lily Pulitzer because her patterns are all so bright. She’s a fabric and fashion designer. Sometimes her style influences my work, especially in the summer.

Which fashion icon is the most influential to your work?

I like Selena Gomez. I like how she puts different pieces together. I would describe her style as fun, funky, and bright. She influences both what I make and what I wear.

What is the theme of your collection for the Fashion Show this coming October? Are you entering in any of the competitions?

I keep on changing my mind, but my latest idea is each look to be inspired by a different Vera Bradley accessory. For the competitions, I’m entering a Glinda costume from the play Wicked for the Inspired by a Musical category. It’s white silk with lace down the bodice and across gathered, puffy sleeves. It has a back zipper closure.

What are some of your more difficult projects?

The Lady Gaga jacket I made for last year’s fashion show. It was the first piece that I used silky fabric for, which was difficult to work with. I really liked how it turned out, and it is probably the project I am most proud of. As far as technique, I’ve sewn princess seams, which is pretty advanced.

If you could costume anything, what would it be?

Aladdin, because I love Arabian costumes, with shiny fabric, puffy pants and sleeves, sequins and ribbons...very ornate.

What other creative art do enjoy besides sewing?

My mom has a jewelry company, so I like to make jewelry, too. I’ve made necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. I use glass beads, stones, and crystals. When my mom has jewelry shows and I sell some of my work there. It’s a lot of fun to do.

Who did you want to win this last season of Project Runway?

I was hoping Mondo would win. I liked how his looks were bright and unique. It was like nothing I’ve seen before. My favorite piece of his was one he designed with Jacqueline Kennedy as his muse.

Words of advice from Melissa:

To people who are sewing, never give up and keep on trying.
