YOUNG DESIGNER INTERVIEW

Morgan

By Jessica Lynn Harris

Seven year old Morgan modeling a dress she designed and made which she will be showing as part of her collection, "Perfect Plaid", in our 2011 Fall Fashion Shows for Kids who sew.

Morgan is our youngest student at seven years old. She is in second grade and her favorite class is Science, because she enjoys the experiments. Besides sewing, Morgan likes to act. Last October, Morgan participated in Love to Sew’s Fashion Show held at the Unionville Community Fair. She and her sister showed their designs as they walked together down the runway.

What do you like best about sewing?

I like doing the sewing best. I like when it’s finished, too.

What are you making for your collection for the fashion show this October?

A skort, a dress, and a vest. I think the vest will be the most difficult. All the fabric for the projects are plaid, and I’m calling my line Perfect Plaid. Last year at the fashion show I felt nervous. But then I had a lot fun. I walked out with Nikki, (her older sister) and we showed a line together. We called it Sisters are Sew Fun

Why did you start sewing?

I got a sewing machine for Christmas last year from my Grandma and that’s what made me want to start sewing. This year, Santa gave me a sewing kit in my stocking for Christmas and I already finished it--it was an owl that was an iPod case.

What was the first clothing project that you made, and what was most challenging about making it?

A peasant blouse. The sleeves were the hardest. I was really excited to wear it for Halloween, and it was part of a cat costume.

Have you made any presents for your friends for family?

I made a dry needle felt Christmas ornament poinsettia for my mom. She loved it! Also, Nikki and I made a Turkey quilt for Thanksgiving and put it out as a decoration.

If could you make the costumes for any movie or play, what would that be?

The Three Musketeers; it’s a play. My mom knows the person who made the costumes at the People’s Light Theatre. They were kind of from the olden days, with cuffs at the end of the pants, and the colors were mostly brown and white. My favorite scene was when the salon people were secretly the musketeers.

What do your friends say about your sewing projects?

The boys don’t really say anything. For Halloween I wore my shirt, so they saw that. Everyone said it looked good. Angel asked me to make a hot pink shirt for her! I brought in my sewing bag for show and tell and I showed everyone my awards and explained what they were for.
