The Order of Your Sewing Process

There is an order process of sewing a garment.  If you have followed many directions and sewn many tops or pants before than you can just about figure it out for yourself.  If you are designing a pattern on your own and need a little help, here is the general order for sewing garments.

Skirts - side, front, and back seams, zipper or closing method, waistband, hem ( minimum of 2 fittings)

Pants - pockets, side, front, and back seams, zipper or closing method, waistband, hem (minimum of 2 fittings)

Blouse or Jacket - attach interfacing, stitch the shaping (darts, gathers, etc.), zippers or button holes, shoulder seams, side seams, neck and front edge, armhole, sleeves, hem (minimum of 3 fittings)

One piece Dress - attach interfacing, stitch the shaping (darts, gathers, etc) shoulders,  side seams, finish top part of dress expect for hem, bottom part of dress, side, back, and front seams, join the skirt bottom to the bodice top of dress at the waistline, attach zipper or buttons holes, hem ( minimum of 3 fittings)

Note: The BEST method for hemming is to have someone else tack or pin up the hem while you wear the garment. (or you hem it while the person whom you made the garment for is wearing it)

For BEST results of a fitted garment I recommend at least 2 fittings and up to 5.
