Burda Style Vintage Swimsuit by Alison
The Good:
This project is free from
BurdaStyle.com, where users can post and share open source
patterns and directions and print them from their home computers.
The web address to find this pattern and directions is //www.burdastyle.com/projects/alison.
I was very pleased with the results: the style, fit, and coverage
are turned out perfectly. You can also post photographs of you in
your suit on the pattern maker’s Burdastyle page!
When making this project,
be sure to use a stretch needle and polyester thread. Rather than
using a straight stitch, use a zigzag stitch with a thin width and
short length.
The Bad:
The directions don’t tell you how much fabric you
need, so I would suggest printing and piecing the pattern pieces
first, measuring, and then going to the fabric store. I gave a
large estimate to be safe (2 yards), and now I have an extra yard
of fabric to make another suit. Also, remember that only the
crotch (rather than the whole suit) is lined, so you will need
only very little lining.
My only other concern was
the pattern pieces included a back-strap piece to cut two of, but
I didn’t ever find out what I was supposed to do with them.
Instead, I extended the band to go all the way around the back,
sides, over my shoulder, and stitched together as a halter around
my neck.
My Project:
I
have been searching for a long time for a reasonably priced
one-piece pinup style swimsuit. I could never find what I was
looking for in stores, and all online options I found were $80 or
more. Finding this pattern was ideal, because it was exactly what I
was looking for and it was not very difficult to manage. I made this
suit in a solid navy.
If you’ve made this project and would like to share your work, send
us pictures! We will be happy to post them here. Also, if you have
anything else to add in regards to the critique of this pattern, we
would love to hear. For both pictures and comments,

Thanks for reading.
