McCall's 6074 One Hour Knit Dress

Love to Sew Studio pattern review for McCall's 6074 One hour dress to sew.

Here is the dress from McCall's sewing pattern 6074, the one hour dress that's easy to sew.

Grade: A

The Good
The directions were easy to follow and explained each step with the clarity necessary for beginners. But at the same time, keep in mind, this project is for STRETCH KNIT ONLY. So you have to sew it accordingly.  It was very rewarding to make, and looks adorable on. It can flatter almost any figure, even the full figure, and is suitable for any age. I feel the results were professional looking. It is quick to slip on and off and makes a great summer dress that can be worn casually with sandals, or dressed up with heels and a sweater for a night out for dinner and a movie.

The Bad
It did not take me, someone who has been sewing for 40 years, one hour to make.  I timed it from layout of the pattern to seam finishing and it took about one hour and 40 minutes. Keep in mind that I counted in the time for seam finishing, and layout and cut out of the pattern. So perhaps if you are just counting the sewing of the dress, it may take someone who is brand new to sewing 1 hour and 15 minutes. I also felt the pattern was a little big in size.

My Project:
I used Project Runway designer April Johnson's knit fabric purchased at Joanne Fabric and Crafts. I adore the way it looks and feels on. I have many sundresses like this style where you just throw it over the head but they are all made in cotton fabric. I am very pleased with the results and will wear this dress many times during the summer and at the beach. I also plan on making one for my mom and my sister. I do feel that new students can make this easy to sew dress as long as you read our pages on sewing with knit fabric first. Keep in mind sewing with knit requires different stitches as well as needles.

If you’ve made this project and would like to share your work, send us pictures! We will be happy to post them here. Also, if you have anything else to add in regards to the critique of this pattern, we would love to hear. For both pictures and comments, email us
