| I
received my diploma from this on-line sewing college program back when it
was known as Thomson Education Direct. I took the program called
Dressmaking and Design. This online sewing program consists of seven
instruction sets that take you step-by-step through techniques and skills
you will need to sew your own clothes. It begins with Introduction to
Sewing and leads you right into reading patterns, pattern lay-out,
creating seams, stitches, and simple pattern alterations. The program also
covers fibers and fabrics, the sewing machine, and both basic and advance
dress making skills.
From start to
finish I feel this program was a huge refresher and benefit for me.
However, I did not pass the tests given after each instruction set with
flying colors like I thought I would have. I had to study hard for
some of them. The tools, books, and information given in this program were
an asset and I keep them in my sewing studio to refer to from time to
time. Small scaled patterns were included which were great practice for
me.
This type of
course sends you books, sample, patterns, and notes, for you to study. For
best results I suggest you start a portfolio and do all of the samples and
keep them in your portfolio for future reference. When you are 90%
completely done the course you will receive a Brother Sewing Machine. I
have to be honest, that's the first time I worked on a Brother Machine and
fell in love with them. Our studio now has eight Project Runway Brother
machines for our students.
If you are brand new to sewing and you want
to learn everything, I highly suggest this program. It starts you from the
beginning, covering line and design, silhouettes, and fabrics and fibers,
and takes you all the way through to completion. It took me almost two
years to complete the online sewing and dressmaking course but keep in
mind, I took it as a review and I was in no hurry to complete it. I'm sure
the average person spending more time a week on it then I did could
complete it in eight or nine months.
I enjoyed the
course, the tools, the books, and I especially enjoyed the final project I
had to make to complete the course. I love a challenge, and made my
daughter a lined summer halter dress for my final project which I received
a 98% on. All of the books, sample patterns, and notes that came with this
online sewing program became a nice addition to my sewing library in our
studio.
