The Making of "Penny the Piano" Costume: DAY ONE

Follow each day and see how 15 year old Lainey, designs and makes the "Penny" costume for the book "Penny the one of a kind Piano" which was recently turned into a musical to be performed at the Snapple theater in New York City, and in D.C. at the Lincoln Center.

Day One: Today we spent two hours just brain storming with ideas, drawing sketches, and planning out the minor details of the structure of the costume. Coming up with a concept of what the director was looking for was a little hard since we were not working directly with the director. The director is looking for the actress to look like a piano. Not a beautiful black baby grand piano with a keyboard, (Which would be much easier to make, as we could make a beautiful black ball gown with a keyboard throughout the dress.) but we need to make a brown older looking, almost distraught piano costume/gown. She wanted the shoulders accented to try and make the gown look like a piano from shoulder to ground. There had to be a key board on the piano because at some point in the musical someone plays her, "the piano." And last, they were looking for the back to be flat, just like a piano.

This is rough sketch of what we came up with to work from:

Rough sketch of our idea for the Penny the Piano costume.

We are going to use Simplicity 3723 as our base pattern to work from:

With only 8 days to make this costume for the lead roll, and doing this in-between school work, dance classes, and homework, the pressure is on. However, as they say in fashion, "Make It Work!', which is what we plan on doing with this project.

After our meeting Lainey headed out with her mom and bought all the supplies:

10 yards of brown fabric
patterns
8 yards of interfacing
black and white fabric for keyboard
foam
22" zipper and 14" zipper
gold fabric for the piano pedals
8 yards of muslin for the under-skirt
shoulder pads
wood
