The Making of "Penny the Piano" Costume: DAY THREE

Follow each day and see how 15 year old Lainey, designs and makes the "Penny" costume for the book "Penny the one of a kind Piano" which was recently turned into a musical to be performed at the Snapple theater in New York City, and in D.C. at the Lincoln Center.

Day Three: Today we attached the sleeves to the bodice, added a shoulder roll, and stitched up the long skirt. We added 14" to the hem of the skirt because we have to allow several extra inches for the boxed underskirt.

The making of Penny the Piano Costume.

While Lainey and Jessica continued to work on the under skirt I finished the bodice and sleeves. The director wanted a squared shoulder, so we added shoulder rolls at the shoulders. This is something similar you would see on a queen's or princesses gown.

Jessica and Lainey continue to work on the boxed under skirt.
penny the piano The boxed underskirt is finished! We stuffed the boxed under skirt with quilt batting and stuffing however, it became real heavy for the actress, so we are going to try and put "swimmies" in it to lighten up the load.

This will look more like a piano on a human body instead of this dress form. It is resting on the dress form's waist, where as on a human it will rest on her hips. We decided to add shoulder straps on the boxed under skirt to help hold it up on the actress. We do not think the waistband is strong enough. We added buttons and buttonholes on the straps to adjust it for the actress.

The making of the keyboard on the Penny the Piano Costume. Jessica and Lainey began the process of the keyboard on the piano. This is going to be the focal point of the gown so we wanted to make it very realistic. We measured the white and black keys on my piano and then adjusted it accordingly to make larger keys so they would be seen from a distance on stage.

We are meeting again tomorrow so let's all get a good night sleep!
