The Making of "Penny the Piano" Costume: DAY FOUR

Follow each day and see how 15 year old Lainey, designs and makes the "Penny" costume for the book "Penny the one of a kind Piano" which was recently turned into a musical to be performed at the Snapple theater in New York City, and in D.C. at the Lincoln Center.
Day Four: Today we were put under a little pressure because tomorrow is the first time the actress is able to do a fitting with the gown. So we are pushing the limit today to get the gown just about done.

Penny the piano gown is almost done.

While Lainey and Jessica began the keyboard upper skirt part of the gown, I continued on the construction of putting the gown together.
Using a fabric art method to sew the keyboard on the gown. Jessica and Lainey began the keyboard part of the gown which will be the focal point of the gown so we wanted to make it as precise as we could. After we measured and adjusted for enlargement of the keys Lainey began sewing the lines on white felt. Since we wanted to see the keyboard from a distance on stage we used a method of fabric art. To form straight lines we zigzagged over black yarn. Just doing a close zigzag stitch would not have been enough to see from a distance, so we pinned the black yarn pieces on and then zigzagged stitched over top.
Pinning the black keys on the piano to sew. Once the lines were sewn in place, we pinned the black keys on and then zigzagged them in place.

Here's the back of the Penny the piano gown.

Here is a photo of Lainey modeling the gown for us. This is the back view. The director did not want anything on the back, just a solid brown back.
