These are images from
Love to Sew’s advertisement for British Vogue. All the pieces had been
part of previous costumes/garments before being put together last
minute for the ad. Jessica made the tutu from a simple knot method.
The tailcoat was made for an Edgar Allen Poe costume, and the black
lace blouse was part of Jessica’s daywear that she made a few years
back. To learn more about how these pieces were made, see instructions
here. |

Jessica spent a good
deal of Autumn 2009 locked in her room on rainy days, drinking Earl
Grey tea, reading Sherlock Holmes stories, and sewing. This dress is
the (rather predictable) result. She used Vogue pattern to make the
dress from soft brown tweed and designed the hat herself from left
over tweed, felt, and netting. |

After reading Pride
and Prejudice, Jessica decided to incorporate the Regency Era empire
waist silhouette into a contemporary dress. The sleeves and the bust
were gathered. The fabric used, in a happy coincidence, had been gifted
to her by both her mother and a friend’s mother in two different states.

Jessica created
her Medieval gown to reference Susan’s costume from the latest
film production of C.S. Lewis’ The
Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. This gown, along with the
knight’s tunic, were made for the PA Renaissance Faire in 2008. |

Again, an
Austin-inspired dress. This is likely due to a semester-long course
dedicated to the English author. Jessica wore this dress to Adelphi’s
English Honors Society author’s costume party.

Jessica was inspired
by 1950s pinup girls to make this hourglass-shaped dress. She used an
aqua blue satin fabric and altered a commercial pattern to create the
tapered, flowing look of the skirt back. |
