Quality Construction of a Garment

With dress making and fashion design it is important to make sure that your client (even if you are making it for yourself) is happy with not only the "look" and "feel" of the garment but also how well it was constructed. Listed below are some points to check in well-made, hand-made garments.

Thread:

-color should match exactly or be one shade darker

-thread should be the same type as the fabric

Hemlines:

-hemlines should hang straight and even

-unless it is top-stitched, you should not see the stitching in the hemline

-stitching should not be too tight, or too loose and "pull" the fabric

Fabrics:

- plaids and certain prints should be matched at all seams

-fabrics should look like natural fabric

-fabrics should be the correct weight, texture, and blend for the garment

Pockets:

-should be straight and lie flat

Seams:

-with most clothing the inside seam allowance should be 5/8"

-ALL SEAMS on ALL garments should be finished, either by zig-zag or by a clean finish

-seams should be pressed flat

-no threads should be hanging or loose

-top stitching should be done evenly

-seams should not "pull" or "wrinkle" and should be flat
