Learn to Sew The Little Sailor Outfit

This sailor-style outfit and accessories appeared in Irish Quilting Magazine as an advertisement for Love to Sew. The sailor dress is a classic look for little girls--in 19th century Japan, when the country introduced uniforms in schools, a sailor dress was the traditional outfit for girls. Now, you can make this simple variant on the look and a matching dress for your doll! Included below are directions for making the skirt--which is high-waisted and made from thick elastic and gathered fabric, the sailor collar--which you can adorn with rick-rack, the doll dress, and the doll flip-flops. Shown in the picture is one of our youngest student sewers, Masy. Have fun!

Thick Elastic Waistband Skirt

This style skirt has been cropping up everywhere, and now, instead of spending thirty dollars, you can make it in an hour. You will learn to gather and seam finish. The skirt is simple with only one side seam.

The Sailor Collar

With this project you will learn how to draft your own pattern, what a facing is, and how to zig-zag appliqué rickrack or lace to adorn your collar.

Matching Doll Dress

Playing with American Girl Dolls is one of my fondest childhood memories, and I loved it when my mom made special outfits so Kirsten and I could match. But the directions to this straight dress are so simple that moms and girls alike can make it!

Matching Flip-flops For Your Doll

These flip-flops are fun and simple. You will need scraps from the fabric you used to make your doll dress and skirt, ribbon, and felt.
