Sewing Bags, Purses and Pocketbooks

How to Make a Purse/Handbag/Tote

This denim beach bag has a matching sun glass holder and colorful fish are appliquéd on the front.

About Sewing Bags Sewing bags, pocketbooks, and purses can be so much fun.  You can design them yourself, or use patterns. In general, you could design your own by making a handle, and just 2 pieces of fabric for the front and back of the bag or purse.
Best type of Fabric to use Light, medium, or heavy weight cotton will work best for making bags.
Easy type Pattern - An easy type of pattern would be a simple bag with a handle, and no added appliqué or sides of a bag.
Difficult type Pattern  A difficult pattern would be one that has many pieces, or a zipper with a casing or facing.  If you are a beginner, stay away from these type of patterns.
Pattern Pieces - Pattern pieces can range from as little as 2, (the bag and the handle) to as many as 12 for a more difficult bag to make.
Cost & Fabric usage Bags and purses require much smaller amounts of fabric than pants or a dress would.  In fact, some purses can be made with left over scraps of fabric from a garment that was made. Even though the cost of fabric would be less because of the small amount you need, the cost could increase if you add things to your bags like buttons, bows, lace, feather, beads, etc.
Comments - Making a simple bag is a great way to start sewing. Then slowly try more difficult bags and purses.  Many purse/bag makers sell their work in craft shows and become designer purse makers. Making it easier for you and more creative, some stores and companies sell awesome looking purse handles that you can buy to make your purses with.

This little bag was made from fake fur, also known as faux fur.
