Designing, Sewing & Making Hats

Jessica and her new hat (beret) she made out of black and taupe checked 100% wool fabric. Now she even looks like an artist.  (Jessica does a lot of our pattern design and art work for our school and this site.)

About Sewing Hats -  Hats are awesome to make !!! Although it is true that some folks are "hat people" and some aren't, hats and head scarf's can really compliment someone's face. Making and designing your own hat can be challenging and rewarding.
Best Fabric to Use - Most hat patterns require fleece and cotton or cotton blend fabrics. Wools, wool blends, leather, and suede make nice "news boy" type of hats.
Easy Type Patterns - An easy type of pattern would be similar to the hat Jessica made in the picture above.  It is a simple beret with no added detail. An easy to make would also be a fleece hat.  Most require no lining.
Difficult type Patterns A difficult type of pattern would have many  pattern pieces. Most hats require some type of lining in them, which makes them a little more difficult in following the pattern directions for the beginner sewer.  If this is your first hat you are making, try one like in the picture above.  It is a simple hat to make, or try a fleece hat.
Pattern Pieces - Most hats have only 3 - 8 pattern pieces.
Cost & Fabric - Hats are very inexpensive to make because they require so little amount of fabric to make.  Most hats can be made with 1/2 to 3/4 yard of fabric.
Comments - Most people look very good in hats.  A hat can really compliment some ones face.  Wearing hats is really coming back in style!!!

Cami made this adorable Halloween hat.  She learned the purpose of lining and interfacing for hat making.

Here is an adorable hat that Jacqueline made.  It is made of black suede and lined in black cotton. This hat can be made reversible if desired.  This hat was quick and easy.  Jacqueline pinned, cut, and made this hat in 1 and 1/2 hours.

Here is Kate who made a simple hat made from fleece. There was no lining involved.

Designing and making your own hat can be as exciting as designing and making your own clothes.  After all, hats are an important and fun accessory to the outfits we wear.

Many hat designers and hat makers are bringing back the art of millinery by joining fashion and creativity to make beautiful hats. There are many awesome sewing patterns that include hats that can be rather easy to make like this one shown here which is fully lined. Great job Heather...you look sew stylish.
