Sewing and Making Pants

How to make Pants

Ultra suede, tiger print comfy pants,  made by Jessica.

About Pants - Pants are probably the most used piece of clothing. Men, women, children, and babies, all wear pants.  There are hundreds of pants patterns to choose from.
Best Fabric to use - Just about any fabric can be used to make pants. Some suggestions are: light weight cotton, denim, corduroy, silk, rayon, and knit.
Easy Type Patterns - An elastic waist band type of pant is best for beginner sewers, as seen in the picture above.  Mostly straight stitching is used.
Difficult Type Patterns - Pants that require a zipper, button hole, buttons, and waist band are more difficult to make.  This type of pant would be for a more advanced sewer.
Pattern Pieces - Shorts can have any where from 1 to 12 or more pattern pieces. One pattern piece being the easier short to make.  The photo above shows a pair of shorts made by one patter piece.
Cost & Fabric Usage - Fabric for pants can range from $3.00 a yard to $30.00 a yard depending on the type of pant you are going to make.  Pants can require about 1 1/2 yards to 3 yards of fabric to make.
Comments - Pants can be used for so many purposes, like:  exercise ,  sleep , "hang around the house in", jeans, for casual wear, dressy pants for work, so remember when making  pants to keep in mind the purpose of your pants and pick a pattern accordingly.  Also keep in mind the  difficulty of the pattern. If you are a new sewer than start with an elastic waist band type of pant.

Another great thing to do with a simple pants pattern is cut and hem them just below the knee for the Capri look!!! This is known as a simple alteration to a sewing pattern.
