Sewing Pillows, How to Sew a Pillow

Making pillows is a great way to learn how to sew.

Ribbon sewn across sections of a 100 % cotton denim pillow.

About Pillows - Pillows come in all different shapes and sizes.  Pillows are fun to make and are a great first project for beginner sewers.  Some pillows require stuffing a lot for a harder pillow  and some you need to stuff a little for a more softer pillow.
Best type of Fabric to use- Just about any type of fabric can be used in making pillows. It is NOT recommended to use a knit or stretch fabric because your pillow will not hold its shape and it will stretch out of shape.
Easy type Pattern - An easy type of pillow pattern would be a simple square or circle with no appliqué or added pattern pieces.  One would simply sew around the sides, leave an opening, turn to pretty side out, stuff the pillow, and hand sew the opening closed.
Difficult type Pattern - A more difficult type of pattern would be a pillow of an "odd" shape with lots of curves and corners, or one that has many small pattern pieces.
Pattern Pieces - Pattern pieces for pillows can be as little as one.  One pattern piece being the easier pillow to make.
Cost & Fabric usage - Pillows can be as little as 3 inches for a doll which of course you could make that out of fabric scraps,  or as big as a body pillow.  The body pillow costing more money to make in fabric, and don't forget the cost of stuffing too!!!
Comments - Pillows really are a great project to begin sewing with.  I recommend ALL of my students to make a pillow when they first start sewing.  It help them sew on a machine, learn about stuffing, and learn to hand sew the opening closed.  Please visit the photo pillow pages for lots of ideas about sewing pillows.

Remember when making pillows most of the time you will sew them pretty sides together.  It is best to leave an opening in the middle of a seam, not at a corner.  It is much easier to hand sew the opening closed if it is in the middle of a side seam on your pillow.  Many easy sewing patterns for pillows can be found at your local fabric store. Pillows can be made as stated above or by buying pillow forms and making covers for them.

Pillows can be made into any shape. This blue star pillow was painted with glitter for added sparkles.

I made these "Ballet Slippers" pillows for my daughter who is an awesome dancer, but hates ballet which is the basic of all dance. ( make sense?)

We Highly recommend these books on Sewing and Making Pillows to anyone who wants to learn to sew or is just getting back into sewing.  They are an excellent resource to get you on the right track for your sewing skills.
