Designing, Sewing, & Making Skirts

How to Make Skirts / How to Sew Skirts

Make your own clothes.  Sew a skirt from an old pair of jeans. Design your own skirt.

When you are learning how to make or sew skirts, keep in mind the length of the skirt with the fabric print or pattern, and the difficulty of the pattern. Many "easy to sew" sewing patterns can be found at your local fabric store, making it simple to sew a skirt.  Skirts can also be made without buying a pattern, as you will find links to directions below. Skirts at any length, with the right top, whether a loose fitting sweater for the winter, or a silk tank for the summer will compliment your shape. Remember to wear clothes to enhance your figure, not hide it.

Sketch your fashion ideas on paper...Always be sketching.

Why Sew Your Own Clothes?

To Learn More About Making Your Own Clothes we suggest Christine Haynes book Chic and Simple Sewing .  It's our favorite sewing book to use for beginners in our studio, and patterns are included.  We also recommend Project RUNWAY DVDs to view as an excellent guide for fashion design.

Jackie sews a "Bubble Skirt".

Jackie's adorable lined bubble skirt.  This was made from a soft wool cotton plaid fabric.  Her bubble skirt is fully lined and has a back zipper.
