Starting a Fashion Design Business

You don't have to be hired by a big company to sell your Fashions. Whether you are 12 years old and have knitted 20 scarves that you would like to sell to your friends, or you are 25, fresh out of fashion school, and want to begin designing clothing for your friends, or 40 and want to open up your own little corner boutique with clothing and purses you have designed and made, these ideas should be helpful to you.

You will need to create a business plan for your new Fashion Design business.

-Choose a name for your Fashion Design Business. (Make it simple, easy, and a catchy or clever name for people to remember)

-Make business cards to give to people. (They can also be used as price tags)

-Make or have labels made for your products. (They should be sewn in each of your garments or accessories.)

-If you are planning to go "big", then have you label Trademarked.

-Make a Start-up costs list. (Everything should be included on that list from all of your supplies, paper, work space, printing cost, etc...)

-Once your Start-up List is complete, you will need to determine if you will need financial help in starting up. (If so, you will need to find a source of funding.)

-Prepare and set up a work space area whether at home, or rental.  Make sure your work space area is organized and stocked with supplies.

-Have a check list readily at your work space area for supplies and equipment. (Keep an eye open to find a list of suppliers who best minimize your expenses.)

-When selling your Fashions keep good records of where they were sold and who bought them. (Places to sell your fashions would be; on the internet, private clients, sell to boutiques, large department stores, trade shows, runway shows, craft shows, and trunk shows.)

More than 30% of all Fashion Designers are self-employed.
