Dress Forms for Making Your Own Clothes

Starting Your Very Own Sewing School...teach others to Sew.

We can help you teach kids to sew with our Sewing Teachers Starter Kit.

Sew,... your thinking about starting your own sewing school, and you want to teach others to sew? These are some ideas that I learned from trial and error with my sewing school. Some things worked for the good and others didn't.  In some places I profited and others I lost  money.  So sit back, grab a cup of tea, while I share some of my ideas with you.

(One thing I would like to share with you before you continue, the MOST asked question I receive by e-mail is ,"Do you have a location in....." People are always asking me if I have a location near them. They are searching for an awesome sewing school either for their child or themselves. I have some students that drive 2 1/2 hours and even some who stay in hotels b/c they come from great distances to attend our school and camps. This is not the ordinary sewing school. It is much more. My goal, my dream, is to have what I offer, all over the USA, to bring back a dying art, which I believe is already happening. I believe sewing, quilting, craft making, and fashion design is on a come back.  There is a GREAT demand for it.  I want everyone to have to opportunity to sew, quilt, craft, or fashion design like I did.  The skill of sewing is what our county began with, and still needs. With that in mind, if you are serious about opening up your own sewing school, consider our "Sewing Teacher Starter" kit and opening up another school like "Love to Sew" near you.)

Let's set up your sewing area

First, and most important... You must know how to sew.  You don't need to be an expert.  If you don't know how to sew,  then take a course or two at a local fabric store.  (It really is very simple).

Second, you need to find an "area" where you will teach.  When I began a few  years ago, it was a corner area in my family den.  Now I have grown to 3 rooms in my house.  This area is for your sewing school ONLY.  Set this rule and keep it!!!! You don't want to have to be moving tables and sewing machines, and ironing boards around.  Make sure if the area is in your home, that ALL of your family understands that this is your area.  If you don't have the room in your home, check with your local churches and  schools.  In most cases they will be thrilled to let you do an after school sewing program.

Once you have an area, you need to organize it.  Keep your supplies ready at all times.  Place a safety poster up so everyone can see it.  If you don't have one then make a simple one, with the basic rules. (don't run with scissors, don't put your fingers on the needle of the sewing machine, don't touch the iron when it is hot, etc...)  Keep your patterns, supplies, thread, etc...at a handy accessible area.

Display many many samples of the projects students can make.  Kids LOVE THIS!!! They love to look at all of the samples!!!  Hang them on the walls, hang them from the ceiling, put them on shelves.  Make your area very appealing to the eye.

Have a VERY STURDY table for your sewing machines and good comfortable chairs for sitting.  Have a cutting table and an ironing board accessible. Make sure all of your supplies are clearly marked and each box or basket has its own place.

Be organized in your new sewing school.

You can teach others to sew.

This is just the beginning.

There is so much more to be said.  If you love to sew like I do, and would like to turn your "sewing hobby" or "love of sewing" into a home-based sewing business, then I would like to help you. Whether you want a one or two day after school program of 6-8 students as a part time job, or if your desire is to have a large sewing school with 60-80 students, we want to help your vision come true.
