How to make or sew a thick elastic waistband skirt with one sideseam, the sailor look. You will need thick elastic, fabric, and basic sewing supplies to make this skirt.

To make the one rectangle skirt piece of fabric we will be using the following measurements.

To get the length of your skirt piece measure from where you like your skirts to lay on your waist or hips down to where you want the hemline to be on your legs. Take that measurement and add 2". This is your length measurement.

To get the width measurement place a tape measure around your hip (Widest area around hip bones and behind.) area and add 10". This is your width measurement.

Cut a piece of fabric into a rectangle with the measurement you came up with.

Pull threads to gather fabric.

Cut the elastic to fit your waist or hip (Wherever you prefer wearing your skirts.) plus one inch.

(There will be a lot of stretching for this step to make the gathering fit to the elastic.)

Stitch the skirt to the elastic band making sure you are stretching the elastic as you sew. (This may feel awkward, but you must stretch as you sew. If some of the skirt stays gathered, that is okay. Once you are done sewing and stretching the skirt will gather automatically.)

Stitch using the pressure foot as your guide.

Zigzag seam finish the edges together. (Also known as "Overcasting.")

How to make or sew a thick elastic waistband skirt with one sideseam, the sailor look. Try the skirt on. If you like where the hem lies, then do a double fold the same way you hemmed to top of the skirt.

If the skirt is too long, trim to your liking plus an inch longer, then do a hem. (You are adding that inch so that when you do a double fold that will make up for the extra inch on the hem.)
