Free Thanksgiving Sewing Project:

How to Make  a Thanksgiving Turkey Quilt

Thanksgiving family turkey quilt.

This project is perfect for the whole family to get involved in. You cut and heat bond the turkey with little sewing. Then each family member writes on a feather what they are thankful for. Last the quilt gets put together and displayed year after year.

For this project you will need:

-about 1/3 of yard of cream fabric for quilt front and back
-quilt batting
-pre-packed quilt binding
-scraps of fall color fabrics
-heat bond or wonder under
-basic sewing needs
Tape four 8.5"X11" pieces of computer paper together.

With a black permanent marker draw a turkey body.

Add the head, eyes, gobble and nose.

Draw one feather.

This will be your pattern.

Pin and cut out one turkey body.
Follow the manufacturers guide on Heat Bond:

(If you do not have heat bond you can zigzag appliqué each feather on.)

Then pin and cut as many feathers as you would like on your turkey. I cut 18 since that is how many relatives were eating Thanksgiving dinner with us.

Peal off the heat-bond paper and place the feather where you want them. Place the turkey body over top and press. If you are not using heat-bond now is the time to pin and zigzag stitch the feathers on.
Using a close zigzag stitch, stitch around the edge of the turkey body.
Using the scraps of fabric with either heat-bond or a zigzag stitch add the eyes, nose, and gobble.
As your guest arrive have each family member write on a feather what they are thankful for.

Cut quilt binding for the two smaller sides of the quilt.

Sandwich the quilt in the quilt binding and pin in place. Stitch along the outer edge as shown in the photo.

Do the same thing to the other two raw edges of the quilt.

Your family turkey quilt is done and can be displayed each Thanksgiving as a reminder of what everyone was so thankful for that year.
