What do Fashion Designers Do?

Learn about Fashion Design and Sewing on lovetosew.com

Fashion Designers help create clothing and accessories. Most specialize in one area such as: women's wear, men's wear, children's wear, hats, purses, shoes, swim wear, lingerie, formal wear, outerwear etc... Some Fashion Designers are self employed and may have individual clients who they design and make clothing for.  Other self employed designers may work for high fashion stores or the corner boutique.

A Fashion Designer will usual make one original garment, and then hire factory seamstress workers to make multiplies of the garment for retail sale. Designers who are hired for small boutiques may make all the garments themselves.

Designers study fashion trends, sketch designs of clothing and accessories, select colors and fabrics, and oversee the final production of their design or vision.

Typically, once a designer has an idea on paper, fabrics are chosen.  First the garment is made using cheaper material (usually muslin) and worn by a model to see what changes or adjustments need to be made.  Then samples of the article using the actual fabrics and materials are sewn and then marketed to clothing retailers. Many designs are shown at a "trade show" or "trunk show" where designers from all over show their lines and designs.  Retailers will then place orders for what they are interested in for their store.
