NO-SEW Easy to Make Yarn Crafts

Sea Octopus

How to make an adorable sea octopus from yarn.

This adorable sea creature, the octopus, is an easy to make, no-sew yarn craft. He is great to make for a brownie or girl scout troop, or just to do on a rainy day.  Almost 40 years ago, this was my first no-sew craft I ever made at a brownie meeting at age 7.  I loved (and still do) making crafts so much that I wanted to share this project with my friends. I came home, gathered up supplies, invited my neighborhood friends over, and taught everyone how to make one !!!

All you need is yarn, a styro ball, and eyes to make the yarn octopus.

This easy yarn craft, the octopus, can be done in any yarn color you prefer.  You will need different colors of yarn, (one for the octopus, and one for the ties), 2 eyes, and a Styrofoam ball.  Any size will do, depending on how big you want your octopus.  I used a 3" round ball.

Cut 32 pieces of yarn.

With the yarn that you want to make your octopus's body in, cut 32 pieces of yarn measuring 36".

Place the yarn around the styro ball evenly.

Holding all 32 pieces of yarn find the half way point of your yarn pieces and place them over the Styrofoam ball just as the photo shows.  Make sure you can not see any white on the ball and that your yarn is covering all of it.

Tie a tight knot.

With your other color yarn, tie a bow TIGHTLY around the bottom of the Styrofoam ball as shown in the photo.

Divide the yarn into 8 pieces, just like an Octopus.

Divide Your Octopus into 8 equal parts as shown in the photo.

Now it's time to braid the yarn.

You are going to braid each of the 8 parts.  Do these one at a time as shown in the photo.

Trim the bottom of each braid so that it looks even.
Send us a photo of your adorable Octopus yarn sea creature so we can post it on our site! Glue the eyes on, and your adorable Sea Creature Octopus is done!!!
